It`s hard for me to talk about Mike in the past. It’s true that our ways came across for a short period of time only. But its meaningfulness was very important for me.
I met him during the last spring, while visiting my sister in Iowa City. Short questions, some curiosity, and immediately we found common interests.
The age gap was not important or had any meaning. We could sit for hours and talk without end, enlighten each other with our mutual knowledge.
Mike was a retired officer from the US army and as such, he was among the few Americans I met, who understood what I was going through as an officer in the Israeli Defence Forces. I told him about my experiences during my service, especially from the last war, and he listened, asked, added and helped.
His vast life experience, his unique and special life path was a guiding light for me, and an exciting opportunity to learn new things.
I felt, for the first time in my life, what is the bond between a grandfather and his grandson. I hope he felt the same way.
Mike was a Jew, a Zionist and a great supporter of the State of Israel. The Jewish people have lost a warrior, a man with great belief. Not so many knew this side about Mike and it is a pity they didn’t. His modesty hided all of the best and the many kinds of his perspective, and it were endless.
As a great warrior, Mike did all he could within his limits, he fought, resisted, succeeded, and he was an innovator.

It’s hard, sometimes, to understand why God takes the good and the best…
I will be always grateful for our shared moments. And I will never forget each one of them.I shall carry with me his great belief, his joy of giving and his commitment.
I, solemnly, promise to continue his way, for better future to all of us.

קשה בשבילי לדבר על מייק בלשון עבר. אמנם דרכינו הצטלבו לתקופה לא ארוכה, אך משמעותה הייתה רבה מאד עבורי.
פגשתי אותו באביב הקודם, בעת שביקרתי אצל אחותי באיווה סיטי. שאלות קצרות, סקרנות ומיד מצאנו נושאי שיחה משותפים.
פער הגילים לא שימש כמגבלה, ויכולנו לשוחח שעות רבות, ולהאיר את הידע של כל אחד.
מייק היה היה קצין בצבא האמריקאי, ככזה, הוא היה בין האמריקאים המעטים שפגשתי שהבינו מה עבר
עלי, קצין בצבא ההגנה לישראל. סיפרתי לו את חוויותי מהשירות הצבאי שלי, בעיקר מהמלחמה האחרונה, והוא האזין, שאל, העיר ועזר.
הניסיון העצום שלו, דרך חייו המיוחדת, היו לי לאורך כל הזמן כאור מנחה וכאפשרות בשבילי ללמוד ולהכיר דברים חדשים.
הרגשתי, בפעם הראשונה בחיים שלי, מהו קשר בין סבא לנכד, ותקוותי שגם הוא חווה אותה חוויה.
מייק היה יהודי, ציוני ותומך נלהב במדינת ישראל. העם היהודי איבד לוחם, איבד איש עם אמונה. לא הרבה הכירו את הצד הזה, וחבל שכך.
הצנעה והענווה שלו הסתירו את כל הצדדים החיוביים שבו והיו כאלה אין סוף.
כלוחם חדור אמונה, מייק עשה את כל יכולתו, במסגרת גבולות הגזרה המצומצמים שהיו לו. הוא נלחם, התעקש, הצליח ופרץ גבולות.
קשה להבין מדוע אלוקים לוקח את הטובים ביותר. קשה עוד יותר להבין את נסתרות החיים האלה.
לעולם אהיה אסיר תודה על הרגעים המשותפים שהיו לנו. לא אשכח ולו רגע אחד מהם.
אני לוקח איתי הלאה את אותה אמונה שהייתה לו, את אותה הרגשת מחויבות ונתינה, ומבטיח, להמשיך את דרכו, למען עתיד טוב יותר.
